Leroy, age 55, skates at rinks, like the Roxy
and the Skate Key, but likes skating outdoors the best. Mainly
because it's free.
I've
been skating here in Central Park ever since 1977. I skated
when I was a little boy in Brooklyn, when they had the round
skates with the balls in them, the little clamp-ons with the
key. In the neighborhood, at night, Oh! I used to watch the
sparks come out the wheels. Yeah!
I come here every weekend, and holidays. I work 5 days, and
I come here during the weekend, if it's nice weather. Yeah,
I work 5 days, and I have to deal with my supervisor and co-workers,
and when I come out here, I take it out on my skates. Oh! I'm
not a violent person, so I I take it out on my skates, and I
feel great! Trust me! You feel good!
I mean, I go home, sleep good, relax. And I love to sweat. I
gotta sweat to let the pores open up to let the germs out. Oh!
I gotta sweat!
My skating is all me. I don't watch other people. It's the music
and me, and how I feel. How I feel! Nothing can be on my mind.
Oh! I have to clear my mind, to go out there to battle!
I can go out there and skate and invent something real quick
and do it!
I've had a cast on my wrists, and scars, oh yeah! The bumps,
the bruises and the skin peeling! Oh! But it doesn't happen
anymore, cause I know what I'm doing now. No, no, no, if I fall
it was a big mistake.
This is my, how do you say, my hobby. No, no, no, no, I have
to have a broken leg, but, no, you ain't gonna get me offa my
skates. No!
