Zereena, age 62,
opened a little restaurant and butcher shop back home in Guyana,
after her husband died and she fell on hard times.
I've been cooking since I was 17 years old; younger, too, but
I can put together a really good curry since I was 17.
My mom learned me to cook, and I can cook everything very good:
roti, curry, rice; everything.
I had my own slaughterhouse in my yard in Guyana; I'd buy my own
cow, my own sheep, my own goat. And from there I start to make
pepperpot and souse, and I used to sell it. My husband died in
'83, and so I had a rough time, so I sell the beef, and I cook,
too, and sell. Back home, we had plenty space, the house was out
back, and in front was a little store, with a couple of chairs
and tables, and people could sit and eat and some people would
come and buy take out. In my village, I was well known for my
cooking.
There are a lot of secrets to making curry. The real one is that
while you cook, you always taste it and add the spices as you
go.
I didn't win a prize in this contest, though I got a certificate.
Everybody was so upset that I did not even get a prize. A lot
of people come and say, "Auntie, your duck tastes so nice,
how come you don't win a prize?" |
